This will help us gather as much information as possible so that we can put an end to this bullying with its’ decades-long history.

“Systemic bullying, hazing and abuse generally are identified with poor, weak or toxic organizational cultures. Cultures that are toxic have stated ethical values that are espoused but not employed, and other non-ethical values which are operational, dominant, but unstated.

Such cultures thrive when good people are silent, silenced, or pushed out; when bad apples are vocal, retained, promoted, and empowered; and when the neutral majority remain silent in order to survive. Those who are most successful in such a toxic culture are those who have adapted to it, or adopted it as their own”. (McKay, Arnold, Fratzl & Thomas, 2008)

Plugging the holes......

The Stop Bullying group put up anti-bullying posters
  • So…the Banner and Poster Procedure was amended by Acting DVC(S) (a.k.a. Nick Saunders) 7 June 2011.
The Stop Bullying group listed the types of bullying which had been suffered by staff and students at this university.
  • So ….a new Diversity and Inclusiveness Policy was introduced, listing types of bullying which were virtually the same as the ones we had highlighted.  Approved, Vice-Chancellor (a.k.a. Nick Saunders). 23 June 2011.
The Stop Bullying group has continued to gather information on bullying at UoN using a variety of methods.
  • So…in the Diversity and Inclusiveness Policy, examples of harassment have been amended to include the displaying or sending offensive information such as posters, letters, e-mails, faxes, screen savers, websites or books etc. Amendment of wording Approved DVC(A&GR) (a.k.a. Kevin McConkey). 1 November 2011.
The Stop Bullying group put a video clip about bullying on Youtube.
  • So .. the University engaged legal experts to block the video clip.
Silencing any form of freedom of speech at the University of Newcastle - is this like trying to plug the holes in a sinking ship?

  2. When a place is over-governed, people behave like babies or they disengage completely.

  10. Also at Sydney Uni, from Crikey.com.au today, 28/11/2011:

A bullying culture at Sydney Uni? An understandably anonymous tipster claims bullying of staff and students at the University of Sydney is now so rampant that staff openly seek to garner the support of students in their fight against an "utterly stubborn" management. They write:

"Further, students have been driven to the point of suicide or even attempted suicide at the hands of bullying university staff and the stock university response is to engage its hired legal guns (the Office of General Counsel) to shut the complainants down. Further still, the university's perpetual cash cow, the Business School, is awash with bullying of Chinese students, first through the over-representation of such students in academic dishonesty matters, and again the discriminatory manner in which those students are dealt with when they make special consideration applications due to illness or misadventure. Chinese students are often publicly yelled at by lecturers in the Business School: 'You are in Australia now, do as we do!'"

Are things really that bad? We'd love to hear from more staff and faculty on life on campus. Drop us a line or comment anonymously.

  11. I was bullied and harrassed not just by my initial line superviser in services division but also by the new manager that was put in place. I was then lied about and rumours placed against me and this went all the way to the DVC of our division.

I was reprimanded for things trivial and also attempted to be reprimanded for things invented I was put on good behaviour and rumours flew about my suspension and return to work.

for my entire time at UON Ourimbah I was the rumour mills favourite poke point and even had complaints formed against me by people who had noting to do with me! I was then given a "redundency" IE: they figured out how to get rid of my job and me without losing a position in the division then replaced me with 5 other positions one higher and 4 lower graded pay levels.

bullying at UON is an inherent way of life and it doesn't matter what they publicly say they have to actually do something worth while about the culture. it is meant to be university not high school......

  12. Dear Anonymous who commented on December 1, 2011 12:03 PM, Commiserations! You will find that under a certain master this place beats all in generating "sham redundancies" (those manufactured to get rid of people who are seen as professional threats to the people in power) using the very antics you just described. Often, it's the low-level and poorly educated folks, the housewives, bougan type who get all their knowledge of the world by watching trashy TV programs that rubbish foreigners. They are often "primed" to do the jobs for the masters. These despicable characters, some pretend to be nice and friendly and others bull terriers and camelians are desperate for a poyrise to lift them out of their miserable positions and money worries, would seize any opportunity to brown-nose their bosses. They are master backstabbers and rumour-spreaders, the most efficient frontline troopers in delivering the final blows to their victims. Some are even honoured with the occasional awards for whatever category they come in on the "human scales". Good citizens of the world, watch out for them because you could be their next victim. The only comfort for the victims is the knowledge that there is bad karma coming to these evil-doers. I have juts seen it happen to one who backstabbed me. It's delicious.
