“Systemic bullying, hazing and abuse generally are identified with poor, weak or toxic organizational cultures. Cultures that are toxic have stated ethical values that are espoused but not employed, and other non-ethical values which are operational, dominant, but unstated.

Such cultures thrive when good people are silent, silenced, or pushed out; when bad apples are vocal, retained, promoted, and empowered; and when the neutral majority remain silent in order to survive. Those who are most successful in such a toxic culture are those who have adapted to it, or adopted it as their own”. (McKay, Arnold, Fratzl & Thomas, 2008)

Is this why Professor Nick Saunders is so worried?

If you Google "Nick Saunders Bond University", SEVEN of the first TEN results come from our website.  The other three relate to newspaper/website reports of his appointment. Even the results about him that have been "removed" are reported.

  1. There'll be a lot more to come to make Nick Saunders and his whole leadership team, including the DVCs, PVCs and HoSs at Newcastle nervous. Karma is coming to all! Just wait for the drama to unfold in the coming months! Australia and Newcastle have had enough!

  2. HES Headline, 24 October:

Only elite unis to survive slump

Julie Hare, Higher education editor ONLY elite, research-intensive universities with global brands will exist in their current form in 15 years, a report warns.

This is hardly surprising, is it given the necessity for a blog like this to exist!

  3. Could some universities be folding much sooner given what's going on? Surely, given what we have experienced, at least some departments/schools have outlived their stated purposes.
