“Systemic bullying, hazing and abuse generally are identified with poor, weak or toxic organizational cultures. Cultures that are toxic have stated ethical values that are espoused but not employed, and other non-ethical values which are operational, dominant, but unstated.

Such cultures thrive when good people are silent, silenced, or pushed out; when bad apples are vocal, retained, promoted, and empowered; and when the neutral majority remain silent in order to survive. Those who are most successful in such a toxic culture are those who have adapted to it, or adopted it as their own”. (McKay, Arnold, Fratzl & Thomas, 2008)

Staff exodus from the University of Newcastle

In March 2013, the Newcastle Herald reported on the senior staff exodus from the University.

At that time, senior staff leaving the university included

  • Professor Mike Calford
  • Professor McConkey
  • Mary Sharp (IT chief)
  • Professor Stephen Crump
  • Professor John Carter

At the time, we wondered what had happened to Professor Sue Gould, Professor Tony Williams and Ian Pike.

The University has now confirmed that Ian Pike, the Director of Human Resources, no longer works at the university.  Apparently his position as Director of Human Resources is "redundant".

So now there is an Associate Director of Human Resources........but no Director!

  1. Ian Pike, the former director of HR should be prosecuted for being a capable accomplice to the UoN management's crimes against staff, academic and administrative, during his tenure in the Saunders/McConkey regime. John Germov, the notorious bully of the School of Humanities and Social Science and now PVC of the Faculty of Education and Arts, made liberal use of Ian Pike's "expertise" in getting rid of his opponents to strengthen his own position in the university.

The University will have no credibility until it gets rid of all the bullies in senior positions because a change of workplace culture necessitates the elimination of these thugs.

  2. This hocus pocus bullshit way of running a university is becoming an issue for concern. Why are so many good academics leaving the university and why are so many barely competent bullies allowed to thrive?
I give the faculty that completely fucked me over another year to justify it's position. It's reputation is already so bad that there are very few concerts given at the faculty. It is rumored that if that faculty keeps going the way it has been going it will completely disintegrate by 2015.

The university is too aggressively corporate now. The last thing anyone actually expects in an educational facility is massive amounts of marginalisation and bullying. They don't care about people, just money.

The university is struggling to maintain its relevance judging by the vast amount of marketing paraphernalia and advertising. The fact that there has to be an anti bullying unit (staffed by a complete bully as well) speaks volumes about what a rank shit hole the university has become.
