“Systemic bullying, hazing and abuse generally are identified with poor, weak or toxic organizational cultures. Cultures that are toxic have stated ethical values that are espoused but not employed, and other non-ethical values which are operational, dominant, but unstated.

Such cultures thrive when good people are silent, silenced, or pushed out; when bad apples are vocal, retained, promoted, and empowered; and when the neutral majority remain silent in order to survive. Those who are most successful in such a toxic culture are those who have adapted to it, or adopted it as their own”. (McKay, Arnold, Fratzl & Thomas, 2008)

Brain drain, building the Hunter, brutal honesty - Scott Holmes now safely in Sydney

On February 10th this year, Scott Holmes wrote in the Newcastle Herald that
  • "Newcastle could well be labelled the export city..... but for its brains. "
  • "there is no recognition that the real issue is how we build the Hunter. "
  • "Until we shift our focus from these distractions  (train line etc) we will not begin to address the real need for a plan at all levels to grow the economic base of the Hunter."
He also speaks of the "lifestyle advantages" of the Hunter..

According to him, Newcastle has many strengths
"but brutal honesty would have to be our defining characteristic."

How does this fit with the Scott Holmes who has used his "study leave" on a six-figure salary from  the University of Newcastle to "investigate" and "research" a new highly paid position for himself .away from the Hunter .... in Sydney? (do as I say not do as I do)

If he is "brutally honest", did he keep the University of Newcastle informed that he was "researching" a new job?

Or did the University offer the "study leave" to find a new job as this was a cheap way to get rid of him? (like the other senior managers and staff who have disappeared since Caroline McMillen became Vice-Chancellor)?

  1. Perhaps Scott had to follow orders after all. If the boat sinks do you stay with the rats or start swimming? Perhaps he chose to swim.

Public deception aside, what makes someone considered prestigious deal in such sleight of hand? What kind of University management insists on this?

Despite the issue angering me, I believe once again a cover up is involved.

What isn't the University telling us that we should all know and try to address?

I remember a famous quote from the Bonfire of the Vanities.

"If the truth won't set you free, then lie."

Maybe this is what happened with the Professor. His academic credentials are solid so why is he talking up Newcastle? He has left the region and it's brain filled University.

I don't believe all of the staff are evil at the UoN, yet the ones who are insist on ruining it for everyone. The ones who are all take and no give.

We are replicating the actions of a country where a fascist dictator has installed themselves and the free thinking intellectuals are desperately fleeing to avoid persecution.

If that is the case in this academic scenario, then Scott is exonerated from his actions.

  2. Remember one full blooded sociopath can ruin everything once fully installed. Think of Europe in 1939 for instance. One person in a moment of vulnerability stirred up an unprecendented level of atrocity because their sole aim was to destroy and the people listened to their lies of devotion and spare nature.

My current thinking is that there is an individual or group of individuals who are sociopathic in the top management. A force of evil that makes upstanding individuals into liars and defensive people into ruin.

If I am right that person or persons won't stop until the whole University has been destroyed. They will use others as puppets and their power to eliminate opposition. It is already happening.
