“Systemic bullying, hazing and abuse generally are identified with poor, weak or toxic organizational cultures. Cultures that are toxic have stated ethical values that are espoused but not employed, and other non-ethical values which are operational, dominant, but unstated.

Such cultures thrive when good people are silent, silenced, or pushed out; when bad apples are vocal, retained, promoted, and empowered; and when the neutral majority remain silent in order to survive. Those who are most successful in such a toxic culture are those who have adapted to it, or adopted it as their own”. (McKay, Arnold, Fratzl & Thomas, 2008)

University of Newcastle management - watch and learn! This is how a responsible university behaves!

Campus Morning Mail reports that

"Late yesterday the University of Canberra announced an academic staff member was suspended without pay following students reporting alleged serious misconduct. The ACT police have conducted a campus search and the university has established an internal review and is making medical, counselling, pastoral and spiritual support available to affected past and present students. It’s a textbook response and while management isn’t talking the leadership is obviously alarmed."

In COMPLETE CONTRAST, what does the University of Newcastle do in similar circumstances?
  • A UoN professor is accused of sexual misconduct against international students - what happens?  The Head of School hushes it up.  This same professor has now been stood down as head of school at Curtin University for sexual misconduct against staff members.
  •
  • A UoN professor bullies a senior lecturer - the lecturer is bullied out of her job and career and is gagged by UoN.  This same professor has now been sidelined at a Sydney university for bullying other members of staff.
The motto of the University of Newcastle?
"Never deal with staff misconduct - just hide it in whatever way you can!"

  1. Unfortunately at Newcastle University it is left up to the victims to agitate for justice.

I would love to be counselled and told that what happened to me was criminal. It would ease my troubled mind.

Instead, the University of Newcastle sweeps all of the evidence under the carpet, blames the victim and then targets anyone who witnesses their atrocities.

    This is unacceptable.

What is heartening to see is that University of Newcastle lecturers who bully try their s|()t at other institutions and get punished appropriately. Scum should pay for their inconsiderate behaviour.

    Stop the Bullies.

  2. The truth is I was bullied severely at the University of Newcastle.

I complained and they did nothing. I tried to commit suicide afterwards.

  3. I complained using the avenues they provided and I ended up powerless to stop the relentless and vicious bullying. I am still suffering very badly and I know I will have to keep on suffering until someone brings the problem out into the open.

The University are trying very hard to ignore the problem. They use marketing and "refreshed" policies. They have actually said there is no problem with bullying. These are all lies.

The University is still not a safe place. There are literally hundreds of victims yet the problem still hasn't been addressed. I was lucky to survive suicide but others weren't.

  4. Instead of achieving my potential I have been given a life of severe poverty and crippling mental illness.

I was treated like a disposable object at the University and given no rights or representation at any stage.

I am trying to make something of my life. I have always been poor but before I studied at the University I had never been bullied. After several truly traumatic episodes of bullying from the both the staff and students I gave up.

I have no savings, no health care plan. Sometimes if I get a power bill or another unexpected cost I have to ration food. Sometimes things feel so hopeless I wish that I could die in my sleep.

The faculty that destroyed me has spent the last 4 years producing nothing. No reasonable amount of research or any other tangible output.

I would have at least thought the faculty would be commercially viable. It isn't.

The faculty's sole achievement in the last year has been to deliberately sabotage a community organization. They have succeeded.

I have lost count of the number of people who have left before completing their degrees or would have considered studying there but didn't because of how toxic it has become.

    1. On the contrary, perhaps we should congratulate a so called academic who has spent the last 7 years ruining a faculty but has managed to avoid any scrutiny,

An "academic" who hasn't had anything substantial published in any peer reviewed journal EVER (the person in question believes themselves as better than the rest of us)

In addition they are a "professor" but don't have a PhD. The same individual is incompetent in pretty much every other of academia as well. Poor delegation skills, relentlessly narcissistic, paranoid, self-centred and extremely careless. Extremely controlling as well.

      ##########################

Some people make mistakes and they get caught up in their sorrow, later they make recompense and you notice that they are fundamentally worth redeeming.

Other individuals make the same errors and may attempt to correct themselves but are not too concerned either way. This is the type of person that is fundamentally flawed or thoroughly evil.

It is like a bad comedy with the arrival of the so called rebel hipster who is "cool" and "fresh" but can't stand any correction in the slightest.

After months of dealing in pretty much constant lying and conjecture, other characters start to notice the person's complete lack of self awareness.

The person sees themselves as something engaging and electrifying but actually actually is skating closer to "dirty old man which should be avoided at all costs" territory.

I think the results pretty much speak for themselves.

    2. Why is the University allowing one sociopathic nut job to ruin a whole faculty?

If you want evidence of how dysfunctional it has become by all means ask questions. What surprises me is that after four years of producing nothing, the University management is absolutely fine with this.

To any University management team member reading this, please don't think you will be able to escape from the fall out from this situation when it finally makes the news.

Do you really think you can lie to everyone? Do you think all the victims who you ignored really feel like protecting you? We know who you are, what you did and of course what you should have done. Just saying sorry won't cut it.

The tide is turning and there are too many victims that refuse to remain silent.

The person in question has held many capable staff and students to ransom to satisfy their endless need to control and dominate others. They have been able to go on with the full protection of the University for way too long.

The list of atrocities committed is very long. Harassment, bullying, sabotage, cronyism, incompetence and calculated obscenity.

It beggars belief why anyone would think this situation is good educational practice.

No results are no results. Talk is cheap.

The time bomb of this scenario is ticking away.
