“Systemic bullying, hazing and abuse generally are identified with poor, weak or toxic organizational cultures. Cultures that are toxic have stated ethical values that are espoused but not employed, and other non-ethical values which are operational, dominant, but unstated.

Such cultures thrive when good people are silent, silenced, or pushed out; when bad apples are vocal, retained, promoted, and empowered; and when the neutral majority remain silent in order to survive. Those who are most successful in such a toxic culture are those who have adapted to it, or adopted it as their own”. (McKay, Arnold, Fratzl & Thomas, 2008)

Congratulations to the University of Newcastle - riding high in the ratings again.

The latest results from the Australian Wellbeing Index survey has found that there are three indicators of a happy life.  These are known as the "golden triangle".

They are
  • FINANCIAL SECURITY
  • A SENSE OF PURPOSE IN LIFE
  • GOOD PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The University of Newcastle has successfully destroyed all three indicators of a happy life for the 195 staff and students who described their bullying in our survey, and for the many others who were to scared to describe what has happened to them.

If you have been bullied or harassed out of your job/studies at the University of Newcastle,
you have NO FINANCIAL SECURITY

If you have been bullied or harassed out of your job/studies at the University of Newcastle,
your SENSE OF PURPOSE IN LIFE has been destroyed.

If you have been bullied or harassed out of your job/studies at the University of Newcastle,
your GOOD PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS with family and friends may be damaged or destroyed.

  1. It is also interesting to note that yet again UoN was named an Employer of Choice for Women. This certainly raises questions about the criteria used to judge such workplaces. It obviously doesn't include numbers of women who resigned and left the institution in the last year. If anyone cared to look at the patterns of departures among high performing women who've left they would quickly discover the pattern of systematic bullying they had in common.

Speaking of departures among women it has also been rumoured that the VC Caroline McMillen has been applying unsuccessfully for other positions.
